FRITZ!Box Connects Devices Across Major Smart Home Platforms

Matter-enabled smart home routers are expanding the role of networking hardware by turning routers into central bridges for connected devices. The FRITZ!Box 5690 Pro is gaining Matter support through FRITZ! Lab, allowing compatible smart home products registered with the router to become accessible through Matter networks. This enables devices such as FRITZ! smart thermostats to work with platforms including Apple Home, Google Home and Amazon Alexa, giving users greater flexibility in how they manage connected products. The update also provides an early preview of functionality expected in FRITZ!OS 8.50.

For smart home businesses, embedding Matter directly into routers could reduce compatibility barriers that often complicate connected home adoption. Router manufacturers can expand beyond connectivity into device management, while accessory brands gain access to broader ecosystems. This approach could encourage consumers to add more connected products without committing to a single smart home platform.
