University of Melbourne Unveiled Its Diabetic Foot Ulcers App

Researchers at the University of Melbourne and RMIT developed a smartphone thermal imaging system to assess diabetic foot ulcers, featuring an app-driven workflow with temperature-mapping to highlight hot spots. The team introduced the approach as a clinical-assessment aid designed to integrate smartphone cameras with thermal sensors, aiming to standardize at-home monitoring. The prototype included image-processing algorithms and a clinician-facing dashboard to track changes over time and support early intervention. Developers said they planned regulatory submissions to enable clinical use in coming years, and work included validation against standard thermography measurements.
