Mixtura Designs the Convent of the Franciscan Fraternity of Bethany

Rome-based studio Mixtura develops the aesthetic of the contemporary convent in a recent project located in Salvador de Bahia, Brazil. The Convent of the Franciscan Fraternity of Bethany is a 5,300-square-meter complex, comprised of multiple buildings arranged around open-air cloisters.

A distinguishing visual element of this project is the textured exterior of the contemporary convent. Mixtura relied on wooden brise soleil, a functional architectural feature that consists of a series of horizontal or vertical slats or louvers made of wood, to generate visual interest. Mixtura's design of the Convent of the Franciscan Fraternity of Bethany reflects the cultural influences of the area and the hospitality of Franciscan and Marian practices.
