The Atari Film Adaptations Bring Classic Games to Theaters

The Atari film adaptations are part of a new partnership between Universal Pictures, Atari and Entertainment 360 to develop feature films based on 10 classic video game franchises. The agreement includes iconic titles such as Pong, Asteroids, Centipede, Missile Command, Adventure, Berzerk, Breakout, Crystal Castles, Millipede and Yars' Revenge. Rather than directly recreating the original gameplay, the films will expand these early gaming properties into large-scale cinematic adventures.

Creative development is being led by producer Guymon Casady alongside writers Matt Reilly and Carl Hampe, who have also been attached as producers on the first feature. The initial screenplay has already been acquired by Universal Pictures, although the specific Atari property remains undisclosed. Production on the first adaptation is expected to begin next year, with a planned theatrical release in 2028, continuing the growing trend of adapting classic video game franchises into feature films.
