Traditional African Courtyard-Inspired Furniture

Terry Aidoo calls attention to the Kabila Collection — a furniture line consisting of a coffee table and accompanying stool that translates the social and cultural significance of the traditional African courtyard into contemporary sculptural wooden objects.

The Kabila Collection essentially transforms furniture from mere functional items into meaningful catalysts for human connection, gathering, and shared experience, with the name Kabila — meaning clan or tribe in both Swahili and Arabic — evoking identity shaped through collective memory and tradition rather than solely through bloodlines. The coffee table functions as a contemporary interpretation of the communal center, while the stools act as individual elements surrounding it. This mirrors the spatial relationships found within traditional courtyard settings and creates a landscape that actively encourages conversation, participation, and exchange. Embedded within the table's surface is a recessed circular detail referencing the Eritrean coffee ceremony, a ritual centered on hospitality and togetherness, and a carved interpretation of Oware, one of the oldest board games in West Africa.
