Urban School Food Alliance Debuts School Lunch is Healthcare

The Urban School Food Alliance, a nonprofit collaborative network of large urban school districts serving approximately 3.8 million students across nearly 7,000 schools, has appointed Dr. Manasa Mantravadi as its first-ever Medical Advisor and launched the 'School Lunch is Healthcare' initiative. This venture formally positions school meals as a recognized pillar of preventive healthcare rather than simply a food service program.

The Urban School Food Alliance's initiative is supported by research linking high-quality school meals to improved academic performance, reduced risk of chronic disease, healthier lifelong eating habits, and better concentration and classroom behavior. It responds to concerning national data showing that ultra-processed foods account for roughly two-thirds of calories consumed by American children and adolescents, while fewer than one in ten adolescents meet federal vegetable intake recommendations.
