Octopus and CATL Build Battery Swapping Hubs for Electric Trucks

Battery swapping networks are accelerating the transition to electric freight by eliminating one of the industry's biggest challenges: charging downtime. Octopus Energy and CATL have launched Swaptopus, a joint venture that will develop a European network of battery-swapping hubs where electric trucks can exchange depleted batteries in minutes instead of waiting hours to recharge. Beyond improving fleet efficiency, the hubs are also designed to support vehicle-to-grid capabilities, allowing stored battery capacity to help balance electricity demand during peak periods.

For logistics operators, battery swapping can increase vehicle utilization, reduce delivery delays, and improve the economics of electrifying heavy-duty fleets. The combination of transportation infrastructure with energy services also creates new revenue opportunities by turning battery networks into flexible grid assets. As commercial vehicle adoption grows, battery swapping networks could become a critical component of Europe's freight ecosystem, supporting cleaner transportation while strengthening energy resilience.
