CIVILIAN Designs Bard College's Campus Interiors
CIVILIAN, a New York City-based building and interior design studio founded by Nicko Elliott and Ksenia Kagner, has completed the interiors for Bard College's North Campus Residence Complex — a 134,360-square-foot project comprising a 20,000-square-foot Head House with study and student life spaces and four dormitory buildings accommodating over 400 students.
CIVILIAN was working in collaboration with architecture firm KPF and project management firm DBI Projects. Drawing inspiration from the legacy of student dorms designed by Modernist architects such as Marcel Breuer, Mies van der Rohe, and Le Corbusier, the firm has created a cohesive interior response that takes formal and material cues from this lineage of great dormitories.
The Head House ground level features soft-seating lounge spaces, offices, and archival photographs of creative exchange capturing the energy of a democratic space that echoes the pioneering approach to education fostered by the institution, while the upper floor offers study carrels set behind slatted screens adjoining a lounge space for smaller groups to collaborate on creative projects.
