Avalara Notes the Complexity of Sales Tax Holidays

Avalara, a provider of cloud-based tax compliance automation, has highlighted the growing complexity of sales tax holidays across the United States, noting that approximately 25 states now hold such events compared to roughly 15 in 2020. Exemptions extend well beyond traditional back-to-school items to include groceries, outdoor recreation gear, and even firearms, while durations have stretched from single weekends to multi-month periods.

Avalara positions its product as a solution for the complex sales tax holidays. AvaTax is designed to automatically apply the correct tax holiday rules across more than 12,000 U.S. sales and use tax jurisdictions, removing the need for retailers to manually adjust point-of-sale systems or toggle exemptions on and off for each holiday, product category, and price threshold. According to Avalara, over 121,000 sales tax holiday rule updates occurred in 2025 alone, and a 2024 survey found that 73% of small and midsize retailers struggled to keep pace with these changes, underscoring the operational burden that automation aims to alleviate.
