Adaptive Peer-Coaching Programs

The University of Queensland, in collaboration with Crossroad Arts and researchers specializing in disability inclusion, has introduced an 'Easy Read' adaptation of its Creating Out Loud peer-coaching program. This initiative is designed to support artists with intellectual disabilities or low literacy in developing leadership skills.

The adaptation of the peer-coaching program stems from academic research led by Dr. Kate Power and Professor Rhonda Faragher. Input from individuals with Down syndrome was also taken into consideration to ensure the materials are genuinely accessible. Unlike traditional text-heavy guides, the Easy Read version employs plain language and visual aids to convey complex concepts. The resource has already undergone successful trials with First Nations artists in Far North Queensland and disability-inclusive arts groups in Mackay.
