Google Lets Users Change Gmail Account Address

Google introduced a new setting that lets US users change the username portion of their Gmail account address, with the feature rolling out after a gradual launch announced in December. The change affects the bit before the @ in your Google Account email and is available via Personal info > Email > Google Account email, featuring a Change Google Account email action when enabled.

The tool preserves account data: previous emails remain in your inbox and your former Gmail name is retained as an alternate email address, allowing people to reach you at either address. Users can sign into Google services with both addresses and the username can be updated once every 12 months.

For consumers this simplifies email rebranding without losing message history or access, reducing friction for users who want a more professional or current address. The move reflects broader account-control trends that give people easier ways to manage digital identities across services.
