Infant Gut Microbiome Studies
Leche and Tiny Health Has Put Out Their Donor Milk Clinical Study
Leche and Tiny Health announced a joint clinical study examining how their donor milk collaboration affects gut health in formula-fed infants, marking one of the first studies to apply modern microbiome science specifically to donor breast milk. The research will assess whether adding a small daily amount of Leche's shelf-stable powdered donor milk to formula feeds produces measurable changes in gut bacterial composition among 100 healthy, full-term babies.
Using shotgun metagenomics, Tiny Health will test infants' gut microbiomes at enrollment and again after one month of supplementation, looking for increases in Bifidobacterium and shifts toward a more breastfed-like pattern.
Leche and Tiny Health show how emerging microbiome research could give donor milk a credible, evidence-based role in infant feeding routines beyond the traditional breast-versus-formula binary.
