Large-Scale Brain Models

Hemispheric Introduced Its Descartes Foundation Model

Hemispheric introduced Descartes, a six-billion-parameter AI foundation model trained on more than 250,000 hours of brain activity, as the NeuroAI company emerged from stealth with $52 million in early-stage funding. Developed over six years, the model is designed to decode non-invasive brain signals and translate them into actionable clinical and research insights.

The system works with a lightweight dry EEG headset that records brain activity while a patient interacts with an app for approximately 15 minutes. Descartes then generates objective results intended to support diagnosis, treatment selection and central nervous system drug and device research. Initial applications will focus on conditions including PTSD, depression, Alzheimer’s disease, schizophrenia, anxiety and mild traumatic brain injury.

For clinicians and researchers, the platform could make brain testing more objective and personalized. Hemispheric will use the funding to expand partnerships, grow its brain data network, scale its U.S. team and pursue regulatory approval.
