Low-Pressure Group Dating Apps

Bumble Launched Its Bumble Plans App to Move Beyond the Swipe

Bumble touted early success with its Bumble Plans app, which connects Gen Z users in low-pressure group settings for drinks and dinners rather than one-on-one swiping. CEO Whitney Wolfe Herd told investors the company would "lean more into real-life experiences" and positioned Plans as a natural bridge from meeting to socializing to eventually dating.

The app lets users continue conversations without swiping or exchanging phone numbers, reflecting Bumble's broader shift away from optimizing for swipe speed toward more intentional, considered interactions. Wolfe Herd also teased a new interaction model designed to replace swiping entirely, though details remain undisclosed for competitive reasons. Plans also include plans to incorporate more AI tools without becoming a fully AI-driven experience.

Bumble's pivot toward group-based, in-person connection signals that dating apps are racing to rebuild trust and genuine chemistry in a category increasingly seen as impersonal and transactional.
