Southeast Asia's 2026 TikTok Shop story is share, not entry

Southeast Asia's platform ecommerce hit US$157.6 billion in 2025 across six markets Shopee already leads. TikTok Shop's 2026 gains are a concentration story, not a market-entry one.

Coverage of TikTok Shop's Southeast Asia push tends to reach for the word "expansion," which implies new territory. The region's own market-tracking data does not support that framing. TikTok Shop has been live in the six major Southeast Asian markets, alongside Shopee and Lazada, for several years. What changed through 2025 and into 2026 is not geography but the split — how much of an already-shared market each platform holds.

The size of the market, first

Momentum Works, a Singapore-based ecommerce research firm whose "Ecommerce in Southeast Asia" report is cited across the region's retail and investment press, put total platform ecommerce GMV across Southeast Asia at US$157.6 billion in 2025, up 22.8% year-on-year. That is the base every platform-level number below sits on top of. It also settles one question on its own: a market of that size growing near 23% in a year is not consolidating for want of demand.

Where the growth concentrated

The same report found three platforms — Shopee, Lazada, and TikTok Shop (the last figure including Tokopedia, which TikTok's Indonesian operations run through following the 2023 Tokopedia tie-up) — now account for approximately 98.8% of the region's platform ecommerce GMV between them. That is the headline worth carrying: independent and smaller platforms' combined share of a US$157.6 billion market is now under two percentage points. A seller weighing where to list is choosing among three companies, not a broader field.

Within that top tier, Shopee held the number-one position in all six markets tracked, with 53% regional share. TikTok Shop's combined GMV (including Tokopedia) reached 65.7% of Shopee's — narrower than a year earlier, and without unseating Shopee's lead in a single market. Growth was uneven by country: Thailand grew 51.8% year-on-year and Malaysia 47.6%, both outpacing the region's 22.8% average, while Indonesia remained the largest single market by GMV share. TikTok Shop's own Southeast Asia GMV roughly doubled year-on-year to US$45.6 billion, per the same tracking.

Bar chart comparing 2025 year-on-year platform ecommerce GMV growth in Thailand (51.8%), Malaysia (47.6%) and the SEA-6 average (22.8%), per Momentum Works.

The region's growth is real. What it is not is evenly distributed, or open — three companies now hold nearly all of it, and the ratio between them is what merits tracking, not whether any of them is "entering" a market they are already in.

What "closing the gap" is actually made of

Momentum Works' separate global tracking shows TikTok Shop on course to top US$100 billion in worldwide GMV for 2026, with first-half 2026 global GMV at US$50.3 billion (up 92% year-on-year) and the U.S. market alone reaching US$11.8 billion in the first half, up 103% year-on-year — enough to reclaim the position of TikTok Shop's single largest market from the Southeast Asian region. That detail changes how the Southeast Asia figures should be read: the platform's fastest-growing market in 2026 is not Southeast Asian, even though Southeast Asia remains its largest regional base by absolute GMV. A brand that treats TikTok Shop's SEA momentum as representative of its global trajectory is reading one region's number as though it were the whole picture.

Live commerce is a documented structural difference between the U.S. and Southeast Asian operations rather than a uniform global pattern. Before assuming a tactic — live selling, a particular creator format — transfers unchanged from one TikTok Shop market to another, check it against the platform's own regional reporting.

So what

A brand deciding where to put Southeast Asia ecommerce budget in 2026 gets nothing actionable from "TikTok Shop is expanding," since it already operates in every relevant market. The concentration ratio is what carries decisions: three platforms hold 98.8% of a US$157.6 billion market, Shopee leads all six countries in it, and TikTok Shop's combined share is closing but has not passed two-thirds of Shopee's GMV as of the most recent tracked period. Any channel decision built on the premise that TikTok Shop is newly available, or that its overall growth rate applies uniformly across markets and formats, should be checked against the country-by-country and platform-by-platform breakdown before budget moves. The regional total obscures exactly the variation that determines which market and which platform is worth the spend.
