TikTok Shop's 2024 GMV made it a transaction layer

Public 2024 tracking put TikTok Shop above US$30 billion in global GMV. The 2026 channel decision is no longer whether to test it, but how to govern it.

Momentum Works, citing Tabcut tabulations, estimated TikTok Shop's 2024 global GMV at roughly US$32.6 billion and U.S. GMV at about US$9 billion. These are public tracking estimates rather than TikTok first-party disclosures, and this brief treats them as historical scale signals to be read alongside later platform and operating evidence.

Bar chart of estimated TikTok Shop GMV in 2024: US$32.6 billion globally and about US$9 billion in the United States, per Momentum Works citing Tabcut.

What the 2024 number is worth is not the growth it records. It is the status threshold the channel crossed. Above US$30 billion of global GMV, TikTok Shop stops being a social-platform feature attached to commerce and starts shaping content production, creator partnerships, marketplace advertising, promotion calendars, product-page design and fulfillment planning.

US$30B is a channel-status threshold

While a channel is small, a brand can treat it as a controlled test: work with a few creators, publish a small batch of videos, run one or two live sessions, review the result as a social experiment. Past US$30 billion globally, the question is different. The platform is not only sending traffic elsewhere; it is completing discovery, trust-building and payment inside its own content environment.

That puts TikTok Shop in competition across several budget lines at once — social media, marketplaces, retail media, affiliate networks and the brand's own direct-to-consumer funnel. Which turns the strategic question into an organisational one: who owns it? Social, ecommerce, performance marketing, marketplace operations, or a dedicated commerce owner?

ELELAND's view is that at this scale the channel needs its own profit-and-loss lens. At minimum, separate content production, creator commission, ads, vouchers, platform fees, refunds, customer service and fulfillment. Without that separation, management sees GMV while margin quietly moves somewhere else.

2024 became the baseline for 2025

The 2024 figure matters largely because 2025 turned it into a baseline so quickly. The H1 2025 public summary put TikTok Shop global GMV at US$26.2 billion in the first half of the year alone, roughly doubling year-on-year. The U.S. reached US$5.8 billion in H1 and Indonesia reached US$6.0 billion.

Those figures indicate simultaneous scale across markets. They do not, on their own, establish anything about changes in seller tools or competitive conditions.

So the question worth asking is not whether TikTok Shop still carries an early traffic advantage. It is whether a brand can build reusable capability — content testing, creator relationships, product-page proof, service scripts, fulfillment rhythm — before the channel becomes fully institutionalized.

Southeast Asia confirms it is now a core channel

Cube's 2025 SEA-6 tracking supplies the regional angle, and its scope needs stating: the estimate covers physical-goods GMV across Shopee, Lazada and TikTok Shop, not all Southeast Asian ecommerce. Within that three-platform pool, TikTok Shop grew 66% and rose to 31%, while Shopee still led with 59% and Lazada fell to 9%. For brands, those figures warrant testing TikTok Shop as a demand-generation and transaction layer alongside marketplace execution.

The effect is clearest in categories that benefit from demonstration and social proof: beauty, personal care, food, fashion, home goods and local brands. Shopee remains the main field for search and replenishment, but TikTok Shop can move buyers who never began with a search query.

Thailand's public material shows the operating structure plainly. TikTok Shop Thailand connects creators, shoppable videos, live selling and in-app checkout, and ThaiRisers highlights selected Thai brands using affiliate, ads, campaigns, Mall and live sessions. The cases are not market averages, but they show the model the platform is building toward: content, creator incentives and transaction tools designed to work as one.

GMV quality matters more than GMV existence

High GMV can hide weak economics. Different sources define GMV differently, and a seller still has to reconcile a gross figure against cancellations, returns, refunds and contribution margin. An internal dashboard should therefore move quickly past GMV to net sales, refund rate, content cost and fulfillment performance.

Content cost is real and recurring. Sustained TikTok Shop work needs planning, shooting, editing, creator management, live scheduling, customer-service scripts, product-page iteration and campaign coordination. Leave those costs outside the channel report and the channel will look stronger than it is.

Maturity raises the cost of participation as well. More sellers mean more competition for creator attention, paid placements and campaign slots. A product that performed well on light content in an early phase may need considerably more operational support once the channel fills up.

So what

TikTok Shop's 2024 GMV above US$30 billion marks a change in channel identity. Asking whether to test it is no longer the useful question; the 2026 question is how to govern it inside the total commerce system.

Decide which categories belong on TikTok Shop because they can be explained through content, which should stay anchored on Shopee for search and replenishment, and which need Lazada or a brand site for trust and after-sales. Then score the result on net sales, refunds, content cost and repeat purchase rather than on the GMV headline alone.
