Originality is now a distribution rule on Facebook.

Meta is turning originality from a creative preference into a ranking condition. Brands need a working definition of original content before production starts.

Originality on Facebook is no longer only a copyright or brand-voice issue. Meta is describing it as a condition that affects distribution. That means a marketing team needs an operational definition of original content before the calendar fills up.

Meta's March 2026 update on rewarding original creators says original Reels views and watch time in the second half of 2025 were roughly double the same period in 2024. The same post says Facebook is reducing recommendation for low-value reuse, minor edits and content that adds little to someone else's work. Because the source is Meta, it should be read as platform policy and self-reported direction. It is still highly relevant to planning because ranking rules shape what production is worth doing.

The benchmark context makes the rule more concrete. Socialinsider reports low average engagement across Facebook business pages in 2025, while Metricool reports stronger reach, impressions and interactions inside its connected-account sample. Together they suggest that distribution may be available, but weak or derivative posts still have little room for response.

For companies, original does not have to mean expensive. It can mean a field observation from store staff, a customer question anonymised and answered, a before-and-after process shot, a small internal dataset, or a third-party article with a clear added interpretation. What is weak is the cosmetic version: reposting a video with new subtitles, trimming a creator's clip without added reporting, or reacting to news without stating what the brand actually learned.

The internal review question should be simple: what information exists in this post that would not exist if our team had not made it? If the answer is only caption style, template or crop, the post is exposed to both editorial weakness and platform-policy risk. If the answer is evidence, access, synthesis or useful judgment, the post has a reason to travel.

So what

Add an originality check before production, not after publishing. Each planned Facebook asset should name its source of originality: owned observation, owned data, first-hand visual, expert explanation or clearly added analysis. That turns originality from a vague creative ideal into a distribution and quality gate.
