Topic tags on Threads are discovery infrastructure, not decoration
Meta says tagged topics generally receive more views, while Threads web and communities make topic tracking easier. The useful move is a small, repeatable tag system.

Meta's Threads update says adding topics to posts has become a valuable creator tool and tagged posts generally receive more views. The same update added discovery-source reporting in Insights. Combined with Communities and the improved Threads web experience, topic tags should be treated as discovery infrastructure rather than decorative hashtags.
The caveat is important. Meta's claim is internal and qualitative; it does not publish the sample, country, category or size of lift. Metricool's external study shows Threads averaged 1,536 impressions and nearly 25 interactions per post across connected accounts, but that is also a sample, not a universal benchmark. The practical value is not the headline number. It is the ability to compare a brand's own tagged and untagged posts under a controlled routine.
A small tag set beats a long tag list
Most teams should start with three to five durable topics. Each topic should describe a real decision area, not a vague content bucket. "SEA marketplace economics" is clearer than "ecommerce"; "creator-led discovery" is clearer than "social media". A useful tag earns repetition because the audience can recognise why the account keeps returning to it.
Threads web makes this easier to manage because custom feeds and saved posts can turn the desktop product into a monitoring surface. A content editor can watch selected topics, save examples, and then decide whether a new post contributes evidence or merely repeats the same observation.
Measure the tag, not only the post
The right unit of review is the topic over time. A single high-view post may be an outlier. A useful topic should show repeatable discovery, replies from relevant accounts, link visits where available and a rising share of conversations that the team can answer with evidence.
Teams should also mark when a post is being recommended outside Threads. Meta says eligible posts can be discovered on Instagram and Facebook, and Threads Insights can show discovery places. That can change interpretation: a tag may look strong because it travelled across apps, not because Threads followers alone responded.
So what
Treat topic tags as a controlled taxonomy. The next action is to define five allowed topics, write one sentence explaining the audience need behind each, and review six weeks of tagged posts against untagged control posts. Keep tags that generate relevant replies; retire tags that only create empty visibility.
